Are lions afraid of mosquitos?

Lions that climb trees?

It actually happens inside Lake Nakuru National Park.

We came across this group of three inside the forest that borders the lake. According to our guides, the lions do this to escape the notorious mosquitoes around here!

My digital camera can't get close enough, so I borrow Dr. Li's camera with the powerful zoom lens:

Lion video!

Here's the video clip of the lions (yes, plural) we saw in Masai Mara. You can see how close they were to our minibus! Please excuse the wobbly camera and whispered Cantonese :)

And here are a few more photos (simply because I can't resist sharing them!)

Simba sighting on our first game drive in Masai Mara

So our tour guide David pulls up along side a rough section of scrub and tall grass, points into the middle and tells us to look for a lion. At first we couldn’t see anything – perhaps an outline, lounging deep in the yellow grasses? We watched for a minute or so, wondering what David was talking out, but then something happened. Out of nowhere, a giant lion’s head appeared, poking above the scrub, glorious mane and long teeth shining – we all gasped.

The lion stretched – we gasped some more; the lion looked at us without interest, then returned to lounging on its back. We smiled – our first lion.

Later on we came across a whole pride of lions – right next to the track!

We were able to get really close and see several females, a male and numerous cubs; these were just 4-5 months old, but already quite big.

As before, the lions simply ignored us, and eventually ambled into the bush.
